SOME DESIGN NOTES My stylization for the backdrop for this virtual-adaptation of the Little Red Riding Hood tale took initial inspiration from old spaghetti westerns, 1920s black and white silent films… and mostly, from my walks in suburban-Helsinki. I would photograph the stark, dead November landscape, then transform the green and brown images into black and white, digitally enhancing their contrasts and ‘puzzling’ the panoramic-images together. This would set the “stage” and tone for the film, imparting a more unrecognizable desert-toned atmosphere to the 20-second animated loop of scenery—which I created in Adobe After Effects.
An early 20th-century style locomotive I sketched-in was added, then ‘fitted’ around the foreground of the landscape and the hand-built train wall/window… each sketch had to be enhanced as the fitting became more refined and the aspect-ratio discerned.
Actual (and minimal) set dressings were brought in while working closely with the costume designer (Maria Rosenqvist), who hand-made each piece from scratch and hand-painted patterns on individual garments.
